Chana Daal/Split Chickpeas
The only side piece I need.
Chana Daal/Split Chickpeas
Chana Daal/Split Chickpeas has a great balance and flavor and this always makes a marvelous weekday meal. Dal is a dish which can comfort all year round.
I always wanted to find a fat free way to get a good food.
Chana daal has a slow impact on blood sugar. So, I find it very satisfying as it doesn’t fasten my blood sugar. If you are diabetic, check your blood sugar after having chana daal.
This particular version has always been a favorite and there are few more steps involved in the making of this delicious daal. I made this in the past, so no extra preparation is required.
It really doesn’t take too much time and you will have a frolicking experience.
A surprisingly easy dish that can also be made as a vegan.
Chana Daal/Split Chickpeas is cooked with onions and certain spices and end up with cilantro and a squeeze of a lemon juice.
There’s so much room for the modification and creativity in this recipe.
Let’s start with my remarkable version of chana dal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Chana Daal/Split Chickpeas
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 cup oil
- 2 cups water
- 2 green chilies
- 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
- 1 tsp salt
Directions
STEP 1
Add chana daal in a bowl and rinse well and soak overnight or at leat 4 hours prior to cooking.
STEP 2
In a pressure cooker, add chana dal, onion, salt, red chili, turmeric and water.
STEP 3
Cook till 7 minutes if using a pressure cooker over a medium heat (depending on the brand os the pressure cooker). When the pressure is released, turn off the heat and open the lid. You can cook in a pan as well.
STEP 4
When it is quite cooked well and soft enough, raise the heat to high and cook till the consistency you want.
STEP 5
Now, in the end, add salt according to your taste and cook for 1 more minute and set aside.
Tarka
In the meanwhile, make tarka for Chana daal as follows:
STEP 1
In another pan, heat oil and add julienne cut garlic and the remaining half sliced onion and cook till it changes its color.
STEP 2
Now, add cumin seeds and count to 5 and stir well and pour this tarka over the dal.
STEP 3
Now put on simmer for 5-10 minutes.
STEP 4
Dish out chana dal and garnish it with a fresh coriander and squeeze lemon juice over it.
STEP 5
Serve this yummy dal with roti or nan or white rice.
Notes
- You can cook daal in a pan or pot. Add 4 cups of water in 1 cup soaked dall and cook for about 45 minutes till daal is soft.
- If daal becomes thick, you can add more water and simmer for more minutes.
- If it becomes thin, simmer for a long period of time till you get enough conisitency.
